Introductry

Northern BC is full of natural shipwrecks, deep walls, and colorful reefs full of life. Access to the northern areas is strictly via live-a-board dive charters or from local operators on Queen Charlotte Island after flying in from Vancouver or Prince Rupert. My favorite way to see visit the best northern sites is while on one of the Nautilus Explorer's trips to/from Alaska. The Queen Charlotte Islands have many unexplored sites and some of the best macro photography I have seen! The wreck of the Transpac slid down the wall at Princess Royal Island and currently rests almost vertical against the wall. Hakai and Browning Pass are also full of sites where a diver will find octopus, wolf eels, sharks, china rockfish, crimson anemones and giant yelloweye rockfish.

The Queen Charlotte Islands lay 93 miles (150 km) off the coast of BC, southeast of Prince Rupert. There are six main islands but over 150 make up the triangular shaped archipelago. Visitors arrive by ferry from Prince Rupert to Skidegate or can depart from Port Hardy and travel up the Inside Passage. Air travel is also available.

I have only visited these islands while on the 116 foot Nautilus Explorer during a multi-day trip from Juneau Alaska to Vancouver. During our adventure we enjoyed diving at several prime sites. Ephigenia Wall, at Langara Island, was one of my favorites. For me, this was a macro photographer’s dream! Another 2-GB memory card for this site! The critters were very prolific in the Charlottes, resembling a mixture of BC and Alaska’s underwater beauty.

Diving is only half the fulfillment. Local culture talks in ancient villages, a rainforest hike, salmon fishing and paddling with kayaks in pristine coves are what help to make the Charlottes a total experience.  Seeing mighty humpback whales breach before you is an exceptional bonus!End Story.
